Gideon: Trusting in God
June 2026
Peter Hogan
We learn in Judges 6-8 that Gideon is a military leader, prophet, and the fifth judge of Israel. His story tells us that God called him to help the Israelites escape from Midianite brutality. It teaches us how to fulfill God’s calling by following and relying on Him. In Chapter 6, it is evident that God may call us before we feel that we are ready. During this time, Israel continues to rebel against the oppressive treatment they received from Midian people. God called Gideon to come to Israel’s rescue, but Gideon considered himself incapable and weak. God reassured him by saying He would be with him. As with Gideon, God wants us to trust in Him for protection.
God can handle doubt, but we must have faith even when we don’t feel like it. (Judges 6:36-40) Gideon constantly asks God if he’s doing the right thing. God blessed Gideon with His grace until Gideon was comfortable. Gideon’s faith gradually grew as he obeyed God without questioning. According to Judges 7, God can make our paths narrow so we understand it’s Him working as they widen. God drastically reduced Gideon’s army so that Gideon would be aware of how God caused the victory. God can work in our lives when we least expect so He is glorified. We can’t do anything without His power.
We see how Gideon’s story points to Jesus because Israel was only temporarily saved, whereas Jesus ultimately saved us through His crucifixion and resurrection. We must look to these same events when we find ourselves wondering if God can truly help us. We must trust God rather than test Him. It’s important to trust Him as we pray, obey, heal, and surrender.
