The Power of Perseverence

James 1:1-4 challenges us to view our struggles as opportunities for growth rather than circumstances that set back our life plans. Jesus never said that our lives would be easy, but we must depend on His guidance. It instructs us not to show favoritism. We must be careful not to judge others based on worldly status. It’s human nature to want to reward and honor those like us, but we must also honor and respect those who don’t always meet our standards.

James discusses trials as the various hardships we face throughout life, ranging from minor to major. However, God knows what will happen and when. If we are trusting in Him, we should understand that they are to challenge us and make us more dependent on Him. It is also possible that we will grow in faithfulness to God. It’s important to know that joy is different from happiness. Biblically speaking, joy is knowing the peace that God provides. As Christians, we should understand that God is with us during the storm, and He has a reason for it.

James 1:3 tells us that a test of our faith can produce perseverance. We have spiritual muscles that we must exercise. It’s similar to physical exercise in that we build up more faith and values. As Christians, we must allow unfortunate issues to grow us spiritually and bring us closer to God. Due to my disability, I’m constantly exercising various muscles to maintain the limited mobility I have. I am physically independent because I can drive myself around using a power wheelchair and perform other activities. Exercising my arms builds my strength so I can drive my chair and operate my computer. Similarly, we must exercise our spiritual muscles so we can do what God has assigned us.

We must have perseverance to live a holy life and have faith in God to run the race even when we can’t see the finish line. We need perseverance to keep us in faith, maintain a spiritual life, and grow in God. Building perseverance is a journey we must be ready to go on. We must remember to communicate with God, as He is the source of our strength. It’s helpful to stay focused on the blessings God has given us. We must keep in community to give and receive encouragement. It’s essential to remember what He has helped us overcome to build our faith and confidence. As v.4 tells us, we must become more like Christ by having more love, wisdom, and humility. We must be confident of who we are in Him and imitate Him always. God has made more humble lately and ask for help when I need it.
